Hello everyone,  it was brought to my attention that there are adverstisments for a hook in at Hallockville this weekend.  There is no hook in this weekend at Hallockville.  I am unable to determine in how many places this was listed.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

2012 Peconic Ruggers Rug Show and Sale

Exciting news!!  Our 2012 rug show is coming up so quickly.  This year it is being held in conjunction with the  Hallockville Fall Festival, September 15 & 16: 32nd Annual Hallockville Fall Festival and Craft Show. A North Fork tradition featuring artisan vendors, food, music, children's games, animals, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. 10 AM to 4 PM. Fee.

Admission to the festival gives you admission to our show and sale. We will transform the Naugles Barn into a fiber fest for your eyes.  We will display our rugs on the barn walls, give informal demonstrations on hooking, have a mini workshop to try it out for yourself (details TBD), and vendors selling the most beautiful dyed, off the bolt and recycled wool; used cutters, hooks, frames and books.  It is a fantastic opportunity to buy supplies in person.

 In these diverse contemporary fiber pieces, Tracy Jamar expands the possibilities of traditional hand-made techniques such as rug hooking, collage, appliqué and embroidery in her contemporary fiber pieces.
Using a combination of new, old and repurposed yarns and fabrics as well as non-traditional materials Jamar works intuitively and spontaneously. On exhibit will be one of a kind works as well as examples from several series inspired by themes of personal interest, such as the Fly Over Land series, based on a sense of place; horse collages and Black T Boros inspired by patched Japanese Boro Noragi textiles.

As an antiques textile restorer and conservator specializing in quilts and hooked rugs for over 30 years in New York City, Jamar is intimately familiar with traditional forms of needlework. In 2009 she returned to college to complete an undergraduate degree at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt., an independent/individualized study of American History Through Women’s Handmade Textiles. After her studies, Jamar has set her restoration business to the side and commits her time to creating contemporary fiber works that blend her appreciation and admiration of early American textiles with her knowledge of construction techniques.

She has received two Awards of Excellence from the Surface Design Association, as well as Juror’s Choice from the Newtown Hooked Art Show. Her works have been shown in juried and invitational exhibits including “Beyond Rugs!” at the Farnsworth Art Museum; “Stripes” a traveling exhibit to Japan. Currently two pieces in “9x9x3: New Visions” are on tour to the Holter Art Museum in Helena, MT, the Dubuque Art Museum and the Textile Museum in Washington DC among other venues. She has appeared on Martha Stewart’s Living television program; on HGTV and in Mary Sheppard Burton’s A Passion for the Creative life: Textiles to Lift the Spirit. This will be her third solo exhibition in the Hamptons.

Hallockville Fiber Fair this weekend!!

The Ruggers will have a tent between the Naugle's Barn and the "Garage".   Try out rug hooking and watch us as we demonstrate the craft throughout the day.

We will have many finished pieces on display.  In addition, we will have supplies, books and finished pieces for sale. 

Our raffle rug, a North Fork Sampler - designed by noted Long Island Artist Gail Horton -  will be on display also - it's almost done!!!!  Get your tickets while you can!

Springtime Meeting at Hallockville

We were back in our "summer home" at Hallockville Museum Farm for our meeting Tuesday night.  We've had a lovely spate of beautiful weather. The spring flowers and apple trees are in full bloom, and there's a new member at the museum, just a few days old!

He's happy to be out and about, but doesn't stray too far from his mother.  I think I need one of these for my back yard -- better than a lawn mower!

Carol brought some completed rugs for show and tell.  This is her Whale of a Tale rug from the class we had last summer with Tina Ackerman of g.woolikers.

She is now working on a pumpkin runner from Searsport.  She also brought a finished rug of Christmas stockings on a line, but I neglected to take a photo of that one.

 

Carol is hooked on hooking.  Her enthusiasm for hooking is so much fun to see.  She's hooking so much, however, that her wrist is out of sorts.  I recommended she try a Meno Trigger hook or a hook with a bent shaft -- both are supposed to minimize the repetitive motion that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.  Another couple of things to try if you are having pain when hooking: make sure you use a hook with a fat shank to open up the holes in your linen and try a thinner cut of wool.  

Here's Rona's most recent rug, a hit-or-miss runner.  Such lovely colors.

Barbara brought along a tribute to her beloved Springer spaniel Baxter.  She mounted her rug in an old printer's type drawer.  Isn't that a fabulous idea?

Bonnie brought a couple of rugs to show us as well.  I love this sampler featuring a cabin in the woods and all the critters that surround it.

Here's another of houses that fit together like puzzle pieces.  Bonnie, like Carol, is so enthusiastic about rug hooking.  Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Bonnie also brought along these delicious carrot cake cupcakes decorated with pansies.  Don't you love the little fence post cup?
